We are a group of young people aged between 15 and 20 attending Kingscourt Youthreach. We have decided to take on the challenge of An Gaisce but first we would like to tell you what we do at Youthreach.
Youthreach is in a specially built centre in the town of Kingscourt . We are surrounded by football pitches, tennis courts, handball alleys and racketball courts so we have no excuse for not being fit - more about that later.
We are a small group so everyone knows everyone and we all get on, well mostly, only kidding!
Woodcraft is just one of the skills we learn. We can make dressers, tables, bookcases, t.v. units or just about anything else we come up with. Not only do we get to keep the pieces of furniture but we can also get a F.E.T.A.C. award for our work.
Art and Craft involves a wide range of activities, from drawing in many different ways to forms of craft such as clay modelling, glass painting and candle making. It is very creative in the Art room, with many projects underway.
In I.T. we learn computer skills . These can also lead to a F.E.T.A.C. award. We create posters, brochures and invitations for different events held at the centre. We use the internet to research projects we are involved in.
Sport and Recreation is a highlight as we have a lot of choice, Football, Basketball , Badminton and Racketball. We go to the local Leisure Centre in Bailieborough once a week to swim and use the equipment in the gym. Maths is another subject we learn here in Youthreach. Unlike at school we learn how to apply maths to different areas such as in woodwork or cooking.
In Communications we learn how to express ourselves through creative writing. We also design our own C.V.'s, learn how to answer adverts to apply for jobs as well as having mock interviews .
Hairdressing is something we learn here as well. Though we have mannequines to practice on, sometimes we use live subjects, volunteers from the class.
In the kitchen,we learn all about food and cookery as well as nutrition. We also cook dinner for the staff and trainees every day as well as providing the catering for events held in the centre.
Music is a new subject at the centre. We learn to read music and have the chance to learn to play drums, keyboard and acoustic guitar.
